Investigate the Dora Siliya-RP-Zamtel Scandal

Now that the President is making attempts to impress the Zambian public that he is digging in for a war against corruption, the occasion has aptly presented itself for him to immediately direct that investigations be instituted into the Dora-RP Caymans-Zamtel Scandal. What is surprising is that the government seems to be keen on letting the scandal die a natural death without informing the public which people, apart from Dora, were involved. It is critical at this point for President Rupiah Banda to show the nation that his recent utterances that he intends to fight corruption are not merely deceptive political rhetoric and hot air.

The vicious circle of corruption currently raging like wild fire can be traced and attributed to the Second Republican president who was eventually convicted in the London Court of embezzling US$50million. Corruption has since deeply rooted its ugly face and is now so highly organized to the extent only comparable to drug cartels. The success of the fight on corruption will depend upon the President's genuine commitment to the fight and he must be seen to be honestly desirous to wage a relentless war on the scourge that is damaging Zambia's society.

One of Zambia's veteran politician and lawyer, Dr. Ludwig Sondashi, has revealed that President RB's two sons have been implicated in the GMO and Dora Siliya-RP-Zamtel Scandal. Recalling that the President stated that there would be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption, the first step against corruption must start with his own sons. This is important to ensure he can clears his own name in order not to be seem to be shielding his sons. Because the scandal involving Dora Siliya and RP Capital is of national significance, the President's rhetoric against corruption will be meaningful if deeds and not words become practical realities.

We support Dr. Sondashi's statement that anyone committed to fight financial impropriety must form strong alliances with The Post in view of The Post's unwavering role of bringing to light information on corruption. That said, what would be the implications of such an alliance between The Post and President RB, would it send clear signals that he seriously intends to take the fight against corruption to a higher level? Would it be for convenience or make believe? However, President RB has to take serious and calculated steps in dealing with his foes. But then, at the end of the day, who has an unblemished closet?
